A Dream Rooftop Concert
It was simply serendipity. Or not, for talent like that doesn’t just come out of thin air. A rooftop in early summer CapeTown under a sliver of a moon, and reminiscing in style with the strains of Ella Fitzgerald and Leonard Cohen’s classics. Done justice by the charming and so-talented duo of Zolani Mahola (of Freshlyground) and Jason Reolon. Patrick Craig of Studio 7 (“Exclusive, Intimate & Unplugged”) had gotten those two together with an ease and grace that put everyone in just the perfect mellow mood. For me, just in from Geneva, via Dubai that afternoon, this was stuff dreams and memories are made of. That November 16th will remain with me as one of the sweetest and most intimate gigs I’ve ever attended, compared to the grand, commercial ones at the Montreux Jazz Festival – Oscar Peterson from way back, and Pat Methany and Prince of recent years – or Wynton Marsalis in Manhattan…or Sting in Hamburg and Geneva. I’ve seen the tops, and loved them, but this was of another, more personal, feel – two superb artists discovering each other (first time!), and we, the lucky audience, discovering them.
From Ella’s “Mr. Paganini” to Leonard’s “Suzanne”, Zolani sang the lyrics with a delicacy and soul that would enchant both those giants, as Jason accompanied her with melodic notes and perfect swinging rhythms. These two have to make this a regular thing, and do an album together – and tell Sting about it – he would know how to put them out there for the world beyond CapeTown.
Thank you Zolani, Jason and Patrick – you are a Dream Team!
